Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare established under the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006 in order to regulate and supervise food safety.
If you run any business involved in the manufacturing, importing, processing, storage and distribution of food products eg. You sell your branded jam, cookies in a supermarket, then it is mandatory to have an FSSAI License registration.
It is a 14 digit license number that needs to be displayed on the label on all the food products as part of the food package.
Food License is essentially taken to keep a check on food product manufacturers as to whether they adhere to the standards set under the Act and provides credibility and confidence to the general public about the quality and safety of such products.
Food Business Operators (FBO) may apply for FSSAI License registration based on their turnover.
If the turnover is less than 12 Lakhs – Form A (It can be later upgraded to a State License).
If the turnover is between 12 lakhs and 20 crores – State License Form B.
If the turnover is more than 20 crores or if you are an importer or exporter- Central license Form B.
